We're going to Finland!!

I'm absolutely bowled over by this - England have just booked a place in the Euro 2009 women's football finals, taking place next year in Finland.

I'm delighted mostly because I'm an England fan, but also because as a Suomephile*I've been really really hoping to go.

It was a tense match. This was the last match of the first-round of qualifying. England were on 19 points, Spain were on 16, meaning that a draw would see us through. Losing would see the group tied, but England have a couple of goals in hand, so we could afford to lose by 1 and we'd still have gone through on goal differences. Losing by 2 would mean that Spain qualify and we have to try our luck in the play-offs.

42 minutes into the match and the Spanish were leading 2-0. Things were not looking good, and one can imagine the choice words that Hope Powell would have had for the team during the break.

10 minutes into the second half and Karen Carney put the first England goal in, followed 22 minutes later by a second from Kelly Smith, making it 2-all.

There followed a tense 15 minutes (13+2 minutes overtime) in the Rachel household as we waited for the final whistle to blow.

It's way too soon for many pictures for the match to come through yet, but this is cadged off of the FA website - Ms Karney celebrating her goal.

I'm doing the Great North Run on Sunday, and that is the reason why I didn't go to Spain to watch the match. I really wish that I wasn't doing the GNR now, because I would really love to be out in Zamora right now!!
